The original "Old Spice" man

When I smell Old Spice, I still think of my father. It was the only cologne he ever wore. When he came home from a long day of work he would pick me up and rub this thick whiskers on my neck, calling me "Jannie Mucks." He was a doctor, a pilot, a hunter and fisherman. He was Alaskan born, bred, and every inch a man's man.
The marketing campaign for Old Spice, which went viral on youtube.com, could have been made 50 years ago had my father consented to being filmed. And I bet he would have consented had it come up. He was self-assured and walked through life supremely confident. He was always "on a horse." Women wanted to be with him and men wanted to be him. He had a rapacious wit, cheated openly at pinochle (though he did not need to), held his ground when bears charged, and never lost his cool even when called upon to do emergency neurosurgery in 1950's Anchorage, Alaska.
Until I had seen the Old Spice commercials, I did not realize how I missed the swashbuckling charm of my father. It is universal perhaps to be drawn to the blend of good humor and almost self-deprecating masculinity of a man who knows his place in the world. And you shall know him too, when you smell Old Spice. That is the smell of my father. Perhaps all our fathers.
